there’s no better feeling than when 2 favorite recipes
combine to become 1 favorite meal.
here’s the dish:
giada’s balsamic chicken drumettes + silver palate slaw (my dad’s version)
follow g’s recipe to a tee - the outcome is otherworldly, like high brow hot wings. (just sub out soy sauce for tamari to make it gluten free) and for the slaw?
2 cups blanched brussels sprouts
2 cups shredded red cabbage
4 tablespoons sherry vinegar
4 tablespoons pure maple syrup
1 tablespoon dijon-style mustard
1/2 cup walnut oil
pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
salt and pepper to taste
1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts
whisk vinegar, syrup and mustard together. gradually, whisk in the oil. season to taste. toss the sprouts and cabbage with the vinaigrette. finally, sprinkle some walnuts.
(this slaw can be found in the silver palate good times cookbook - from 1985. the silver palate was a manhattan gourmet food shop that ruled the roost in the 80’s. one of its owners, shelia lukins, was a prolific cookbook writer - hers were some of the very first i pulled off my mother’s shelves when i was little. as my dad said recently, ‘there isn’t one recipe in this book that isn’t perfect!’ it’s true. plus, good times are guaranteed in the title. verified by the amazing cover photo)
